As the dark nights draw in, now’s the perfect time to transform your bedroom into a cocoon of cosiness. Your sleep sanctuary should be a warm escape from cold evenings so we’ve rounded up our top tips to help you make your bedroom a snug place to retreat to this winter.
1. Incorporate cosy colours

When it comes to cosy bedroom colours, think warm neutrals and shades with hints of pink, red, orange or yellow. These colours have a warm undertone and if used in a lighter hue will make your space feel restful and airy, or if used in a deep shade can make even a large bedroom feel more intimate.
Once you’ve decided if you’d prefer your space to be calming and bright or dark and inviting, you can think about how you’d like to incorporate these colours.
An obvious choice is repainting your walls or ceiling if you’re feeling adventurous, but there are plenty of ways to work these colours into your bedroom without having to do a complete makeover.
Accessories or smaller pieces of bedroom furniture can be a great way to include pops of colour and add warmth to cold corners. Hide away all of your necessities and add a bit of contrast with a painted bedside table or opt for colourful lamps and trinkets.
2. Add depth and luxury with a velvet headboard

A great way to add texture and maximum cosiness to your bedroom is with a velvet headboard. There’s nothing nicer than getting into bed at night and cuddling up to an unbelievably soft cushioned headboard.
For a soft bright look, choose muted tones such as grey or dusky pink, or for a deep and luxurious style choose sumptuous dark tones such as midnight blue.
3. Embrace wallpapers and patterns

If you’re struggling with how to make a plain bedroom cosy, consider adding fun wallpaper. This will add dimension and excitement to the space, naturally making it feel warmer and more modern.
Choosing wallpaper for your bedroom can be a daunting task with lots to think about, so here are our top tips to keep your bedroom feeling cosy with wallpaper:
- Match the design to the rest of your decor. If your style is modern, opt for geometric and abstract patterns. More formal? Damask or hand-painted prints will work best!
- Tie in your wallpaper with the rest of your colour palette. Create drama and contrast by choosing wallpaper in your accent colour, and place it on your focal wall.
- Should you choose a plain or patterned wallpaper? It ultimately depends on your existing decor and preferences. If your bedroom is already heavily patterned, plain wallpaper can offer a nice visual break. But if you’re into maximalist decor, why not choose a wallpaper in a contrasting pattern, or a pattern of a different size?
4. Diffuse your lighting

As the days get shorter, we rely on our overhead lighting a lot more. If when you turn on your lights it casts a bright cool white, you might be stripping away some of the warmth and cosiness you’re trying to achieve. But this is an easy thing to fix.
Simply swap out your overhead bulbs and choose one with a warm and natural white – these will often be marked with a lower K rating of 3,000k-4,000k. If you have bedside lamps, opt for something even warmer and choose a bulb with a colour temperature around 2,000 – 2,700K. You’ll really notice the difference that these small changes can have on brightening your home.
5. Stick to warm wood tones

Adding touches of wood is a great way to add cosy warmth to your bedroom. You can incorporate wood into your wall decor through board cladding, crown moulding or even panelling.
Or, if you don’t want to add touches of wood to your wall, choosing wood furnishings and accents will give you the same effect! For a real dark and cosy bedroom look, mix warm wood tones with more rustic styling.
6. Add an area rug

Creating a cosy bedroom also involves adding touches of comfort to your space. When you get out of bed, it’s nice if your feet land on a soft surface. Adding a plush area rug in your bedroom provides you with warmth and creates an extra layer of texture. Choose woven rugs for a tactile feel, or a tufted shaggy rug for softness.
7. Dress the windows

Bare windows, particularly in older homes, can make your sanctuary feel cold and draughty. If you have thin or sheer curtains, now might be the time to upgrade to some thicker window treatments. Velvet, wool or thick cotton are great heavy duty fabrics which will help block out any breezes and add some beautiful texture to your room. Try to avoid anything with a strong pattern as they typically take away from the balance you’ve created in the rest of the rest of the room.
If you also struggle to get to sleep quickly, opt for blackout curtains to help block out the light and blanket your bedroom in darkness to help aid in a good night’s rest.
8. Create a reading nook

One of the most common questions we get asked is how to make a big bedroom cosy. If you have extra space, it’s the perfect opportunity to create a comfortable reading nook for you to curl up with a good book.
Choose an area that’s next to a big window or by the corner in your bedroom. Add bookshelves, a rug, a reading light, a small table, and a cosy chair to really create a designated reading spot. To help set the mood, why not also add a scented candle, some throw pillows, and fuzzy or knitted blankets?
9. Layer with seasonal accessories

If you’re working with a neutral space, adding pops of colour with seasonal accessories is a great way to add cosiness and intrigue. Switch linen for tweed over the cooler months for example, and add cosier, knitted throws and pillow covers to introduce warmth, as well as a textural and visual interest to your bedroom. This is also a great way to play around with cosy bedroom ideas on a small budget. By combining the elements mentioned above, you should be well on your way to creating a cosy bedroom.
