Summer is upon us, which means many of us will likely want to spend some time relaxing in our gardens, or entertaining guests with a summer BBQ. But, is your outdoor space up to scratch? Your garden doesn’t need to be a modern oasis, or a fantastically landscaped patio haven, but a little bit of TLC can make a huge difference. To make sure that you’re ready for the season, we’ve put together some quick and cost-effective ways to give your garden the well-deserved spruce up it deserves, so that you can impress your friends and family.
1. Illuminate your space

Garden lights make all the difference. Not only are they incredibly practical when the natural light fades, they also instantly improve the look of any outdoor space. Attach bulb lights across your fence, or weave some string lights around a tree to illuminate the space. You can also create a warming scent and ambience by lighting a garden candle and adding lanterns with battery-powered LED tea lights. Or why not draw the eyes down? Stick light sticks into your flower beds or around the patio to show off your beautiful work.
2. Get painting!

A great way to brighten up your space is to add a lick of paint. Dealing with a drab grey wall or an old, unloved fence? Get yourself a couple of brushes and a tin of bright paint! Opt for a pale pink, blue or green to give your garden a fun, statement backdrop. If going all-in with a bold colour is a scary prospect, opt for neutral paint and liven it up with painted pots or bright flowers. If you’re working with concrete floors or a wood patio, you could even paint the floor!

3. Go wild with plants and flowers

Decorating your garden is all about embracing the natural elements – so don’t forget plants or flowers. If you’ve got a green thumb, plant ahead of time in flower beds, planters, or pots. But don’t worry if the season has passed, pop to your local garden centre and find some pre-potted perennials. They’ll add beautiful colour to your garden each year. If flowers aren’t your thing, find some hardy outdoor plants to fit your outdoor styling. Why not create your own herb garden? You’ll fill your garden with beautiful aromas – and you can use them in your cooking too.

4. Get cosy with texture
We all know that texture is incredibly important when it comes to interior design, and exteriors make no exception. A lovely way to help guests move through the garden space, is to position these seats at different points. Of course, you’ll want lots of seating in the main eating area, probably around a table, but why not also pop some different types of seats throughout the garden. If you have a lovely flower patch, place a bench opposite so people can enjoy the view. If you have a little wild flower garden, set a little love seat just out of the way, so people can enjoy some privacy and time together. There are lots of lovely ways to incorporate seating into a garden, that allow the visitors to enjoy your space, and each other.
6. Stylish Dining

It goes without saying that a great outdoor party will look even better if you invest some time and money into your dining sets. Creating a lavish looking, styled entertaining space will really give your garden the wow factor. Again, as we mentioned earlier, why not think about using colour effectively here.
7. Garden Games:

The party will really go with a swing if you get some garden games going, especially if you’re entertaining a variety of ages that include children. If you’re feeling creative, why not set up a treasure hunt and split the guests into teams. A garden Pinata always goes down well, and if you don’t want to fill it with sweets, why not the winner enjoy a sprinkling of garden confetti. The more traditional games like Boules, Croquet and of course, Swing Ball are firm favourites with many people, and will really add an extra dimension to your party or gathering.
