Because you don’t see your mattress everyday, it’s easy to overlook its importance. Sandwiched between your beautiful duvet sets and your sturdy oak bed, it’s likely to be kept out of sight and out of mind, yet it’s one of the most important pieces of furniture in your entire home. Your health and wellbeing is dependent on how well you sleep and a key component of good sleep is a quality mattress.

There are a lot of questions to ask when buying a mattress, so we rundown everything you need to consider when making this important investment.

What do I like and dislike about my current mattress?

Is your mattress lumpy? Does it leave you feeling hot and sweaty? Are any back problems heightened when you wake up in the morning? Your personal comfort levels should be the first thing you address when shopping for a mattress. This will help you decide what you need to guarantee a great night’s sleep.

How much can you afford to spend on a mattress?

The cash you’re willing to splash will depend on your own home budget. However, you do have to ask yourself how much a good night’s sleep is worth to you. For king-size mattresses, we would suggest spending between £320 and £1100, adjusting accordingly as the mattress size changes. Allocating more spend on your mattress will get you features such as natural fibres, stronger pocket springs, and cooling technology.

How do you know if you’re buying a quality mattress?

We bang on a fair bit about quality mattresses, but your mattress (if properly cared for – and more on that later) should last you between eight to ten years, so it’s important to invest in something that will serve you well and stand the test of time.

What size mattress do you need?

As more and more people have realised how crucial comfort in the bedroom is, the king-size bed has superseded the double bed as the most popular bed size in the UK. Yet, the size mattress you need will all depend on the size of your bed frame. As all our mattresses are standardised, you won’t ever experience any confusion about what size is right for your bed frame.

What mattress firmness do you like?

Mattresses firmness is not a one-size-fits-all rule. While firmness helps to properly support your spine, ‘firmer’ does not necessarily mean ‘better’ and it is all down to your personal needs and requirements. Comfort is determined by different layers that contribute to a mattress feeling ‘soft’ or ‘firm’.

Our TWeaK mattress really is one of a kind as it’s completely customisable (on both sides of the bed too so if you and your partner have different needs in a mattress, it’s no problem – read more on this below!) as it offers a replaceable system of foam inserts that allow you to adjust your mattress to firm, medium and hard – an incredibly useful feature for those with back pain or those who require different levels of comfort at different points in the year.

Do you and your partner have separate sleeping needs?

When sleeping alone, there is only one person you need to think about. But when two are tucking in every night, you may have two different needs to contend with. Traditionally, this may have been an issue, but not with our TWeaK mattress. The stand-out design incorporates a mattress that is split down the middle and can be cushioned to each sleeper’s specific requirements, such as orthopedic issues or just a preference for something softer.

How to dispose of an old mattress

We’ve all seen unsightly mattresses abandoned on the roadside and we can assure you that this is not the correct way to dispose of an old mattress. You can take it to a tip yourself, but this is not a very eco-friendly option. So we suggest taking your mattress to a recycling center or asking your local council about their options instead.

Think your mattress is showing signs of wear and tear? Here are the tell-tale signs that you need a new mattress.

As an authority on mattresses, we often get quizzed on how to care for them – after all, we all want to prolong the life of these crucial pieces of furniture! Here are some of our most asked questions.

How to care for a new mattress

The key to mattress care is airing it out. Initially, unwrap your mattress as soon as it arrives and let it air out to remove any of the unwelcome plastic-y smells it’s accumulated during warehouse storage. We suggest you regularly air it out once it’s in use also: in the morning, throw back your duvet and pillows to allow body moisture to evaporate away. We also recommend protecting your mattress with a mattress protector.

Why do you need to flip your mattress?

If you have a memory foam mattress or a mattress with an in-built topper, you don’t need to worry about this part as flipping your mattress means you won’t reap the memory foam benefits. This is true for the Tweak mattress too – the unique inserts and design mean it’s ready for use 24/7 if needed without the need to rotate or flip! Otherwise, your new mattress should be rotated every week for the first three months and anything older than three months should be turned over every four months. This means that each side will be used equally, helping to improve its lifespan.

What is the best way to clean a mattress?

To keep your mattress fresh and prevent dust-related allergies, we recommend cleaning your mattress every six months, undertaking the following steps:

  1. Vacuum the surface of your mattress
  2. Identify any blemishes and spot clean with stain remover
  3. Sprinkle baking soda over the mattress for as long as possible and vacuum again before returning to your bed frame
